So simple.
We do all sorts of rice bins up in this piece, and my kiddos’ favorite is when they get a fresh batch of colorful rice. The best part? If you play your cards right, this activity will cost you $3.00. That’s right; 3 bucks.
Go to the Dollar Tree and get a bag of white rice, food coloring, and a bottle of white vinegar. That’s it!
For this activity you will need:
- White rice
- White vinegar
- Food coloring
- Container to mix/store (I use a snack size plastic baggie)
- A TBS measuring spoon
Start by filling your snack baggie like 1/2 to 3/4 way full of rice.

Next, put 4ish drops of food coloring in your TBS, and add a few drops of vinegar to the coloring. Then pour it into your little bag of rice. (You don’t need much!)

Then seal and shake the bag. Mix the color all around. Determine if you need to add more color (always use vinegar and dye if you’re adding more).

That’s it! I used to prepare all these activities at night when my kiddos had gone to bed, but recently I’ve been letting my almost four year old daughter help with certain ones. This was an activity in itself for her! She felt so accomplished, and was so proud to tell her brothers the next day she made them colorful rice. I put them in the Easter eggs after she had gone to bed so it would be a little surprise for her, and I’d have one less thing to clean up. Next up I will show you how I put together a rice bin. I put them together in stages so I get maximum interest and maximum time I can get work done.

Did you add colorful rice to your rice bin play? If so, how’d it go?
